In April 2022, global smartphone sales fell 8% year-on-year, but Samsung’s sales rose 9% year-on-year. Samsung captured nearly a quarter of the global smartphone market in April 2022. This is Samsung’s highest monthly market share since April 2017.
On May 27, 2022, according to Counterpoint Research’s Market Pulse Service, Samsung’s smartphone sales grew by 9% year-on-year in April 2022, capturing a 24% share of the global smartphone market. This is Samsung’s highest monthly market share since April 2017. The company’s sales continued to grow despite an 8% year-over-year decline in global smartphone sales over the same period. In fact, it’s one of the few brands to grow despite a declining market.
The growth helped Samsung lead the global smartphone market for the third month in a row in 2022. It also became the No. 1 brand in the Indian market in April for the first time since August 2020.

Samsung Research Director Tarun Pathak comment: “Samsung captured nearly a quarter of the global smartphone market in April 2022, reaching its highest monthly share in the past five years. The growth was driven by the strong performance of the S22 series in the high-end segment and the A-series in the mid-range segment. Samsung’s exposure to the declining Chinese market was also low, which negatively impacted sales of all Chinese OEMs. Samsung’s Latin American Promotions in some core markets and growth in India, where it became the No. 1 brand in April, also helped expand market share for the month. Samsung’s supply chain is also well-managed through 2022, successfully meeting its demand.”
The senior analyst Varun Mishra for the global smartphone market said: “In April 2022, the global smartphone market declined further, reaching the lowest level since the 2020 pandemic. China saw the largest decline as consumer confidence weakened due to the lockdown. Sales in Russia also fell in April as major OEMs exited the market and depleted inventories. These factors meant another setback for the market, which is still recovering from parts shortages. Latin America, U.S. and India were the only markets showing growth, but that was not enough to offset declines in other regions.”
Samsung is likely to maintain its lead in the global smartphone market in the second quarter of 2022. There’s also a lot of potential in the foldable phone segment, where Samsung is currently the undisputed leader. Samsung’s goal is to lower the price of foldable phones to gain a competitive edge.
